Snow
It was snow, finally, through which
. . . . . . . .you turned to go –
A whiteness suddenly gone thick
. . . . . . . .within the flow
Of wind – large flakes brushing against
. . . . . . . .our cold faces,
Our lashes, enlarging the dense
. . . . . . . .empty spaces
Between us – those surrogate tears
. . . . . . . .somehow showing
By their vanishing it was clear
. . . . . . . .you were going.
by Jared Carter.
Editor’s Note: This poem’s spare imagery says a great deal with very few words. The form embodies the season, which in turn represents the narrator’s emotional loss.
