How to change your name by Jane Røken

How to change your name

Take your name
in both hands. Hold it firmly
but by no means unkindly.
Look it straight in the eye.
Forgive it everything,
just as you must ask
its forgiveness.
Stretch it gently.
Knead it a bit, shape it
into an adjective,
or a noun, if you’re bold.
Give it a slight turn,
a quick twist –
and you can wear it
around your neck
on Sundays.

Editor’s Note: Some poems can be deceptively simple. Upon rereading, you realize the depth of experience it takes to truly understand the meaning.

Only on Sunday? My dear one, every day if you wish?
