From the archives – The Miles Before Sleep by Mary Alexandra Agner

The Miles Before Sleep

inspired by the title of a Martin Willitts Jr. poem

Country singers say they go by truck wheels,
rubber tumbling, lost in Patsy Cline,
and poets, with debated metaphor, and rhyme,
get lost in snow and near forget their horse.
The rest of us walk crosswalks, train tracks, asphalt
between the lot and daycare, food store, work.
Unlike the lyrics, sneakers leave no footprint,
except on melting days we’d just as soon forget,
indeed all roads are laid with just that goal:
to go on without notice of the ones
who go on them, whose tread, tires or tired
feet the only thing which keeps the count:
miles to go before I sleep
recorded one by one in bones, in cracks,
invisible—and numberless as breath.

    Dear Christine,
This is not a cover letter! Just teasing! I just read that you and Autumn Sky will be leaving us! I can so understand why. I hope you know how much you contributed to our daily lives each morning. Your posts were so anticipated, especially if we had submitted. We would do the 5 day count down in the hopes that you had chosen our poems…a great honor! We respected your selections and comments. Sometimes that poem would carry us through the day. You published my poems several times and chose one as a Push Cart Prize nominee! Thank you , Christine. I felt so honored. Often, myself and a friend would send messages after reading your selection…What did you think of Christine’s choice! So wonderful or maybe…What was she thinking? What will we do without you? Know that you have been much respected, appreciated and even loved by your readers. The best of luck and much joy with your own work. I hope there will be a venue for us to read it. Also thanks for sending me to Jack Gilbert whom you mentioned somewhere along the online way. I read him daily now. We all choose you and you have 5 days and forever!

Carol, thank you so much for your kind words. You have no idea how much it means to me that you took the time to express how you felt about Autumn Sky, and the poems I’ve chosen. I was delighted to publish you, and hopefully when I have time and space to open up Autumn Sky Poetry DAILY again, you’ll send me more of your lovely work. Peace.
