Daydreaming instead of walking by Christine Klocek-Lim

Daydreaming instead of walking

The tiles feel like smooth stones beneath my feet.
And that old hall carpet has soft reeds so tired
from years of tread they barely speak.
The skin of my heels is old too,
but still somewhat working nonetheless.
It’s over fifty years now
since I learned to walk.

And the trees outside are the same.
The sky and the flowers.
I’ve learned how to feel the earth
through my toes. Sometimes the ground
moves so hard I can barely stand. Sometimes
my body doesn’t remember how to stand upright.
Sometimes I don’t quite understand
that the map won’t always lead home,
but I go out, nonetheless.

The infinite ocean feels cold. Too cold.
And the sand is hot as hell. In the deep woods,
such extremes are impossible, so I prefer
it there. I walk on moss-soft rocks when I can,
whispering to the snakes about waves
and dunes and impossible skies
they’ll never see.

But I’ve broken bones like this. Daydreaming
instead of walking. I’ve gone down into the pain
and back out again, though imperfectly.
Everything about life is like that: the tiles—
cracked and crooked, the fraying reed rug,
the startling chill of the dark forest.
The quiet moss, dew-wet and alive
over stones long dead.

This is how one goes from youth to old age—
one step into another. Repeat.
And then from old age into the next age,
where the world of souls is constructed
of trees and stones. Where the moss
is deep as an ocean and just as impenetrable.
Where the sand is warm as an old reed rug
and we can all lay down together,
give our feet a rest.

I love this poem. I spend a lot of time in nature, am aging, have tripped in the woods & fallen too with minor but lingering injuries.

Happy Birthday, Christine! I have been swimming to age 80! It keeps your sore feet off the ground! Or keep your head in the clouds which has the same effect. Thank you for bringing us such excellent poetry that heals our souls! Do pardon the feet puns of heels and soles!) Not surprising that your poem is so excellent!

Happy Birthday Christine! I’m really glad you give us this one day, the day in which you have completed your annual trip around the sun, to appreciate your work. Your poem resonates for me. In many ways it is ‘tactile’, as well as visual. I love the ‘where’ it wandered to and I thank you for this journal.

Thank you, Margot. I try to write with images that encompass as many senses as I can, so I appreciate you noticing. 🙂

This is wonderful! Such vivid imagery, and the flowing expansion from the present moment into the past, the future, and the whole arc of time… Thank you for sharing this!

Such a sensual poem. I can feel it in my own tired, aging feet. The interplay of sound is sophisticated. The whole experience, and it is a physical, mental and emotional experience, gives me hope through the natural world.

Joanne, thank you! I especially appreciate you noticing the sounds. 🙂

Whether seasoned and a mite roughened and weary, or youthful and more inclined to dance than to walk, feet are a great subject for poems. This poem is alive and alert, of skillful cadence and sure-footed (!!) idiom, and I’m grateful to have read it. Happy birthday!
