The Strong Thread
Perhaps you know about the strong thread the one that William Stafford
writes about that holds all your old dreams & your beforelife & your afterlife
the one that feels like breath or the beating cloud of a heart that if you let it go
you might die or fall into a life you don’t want like the one where you were drawn
by nicotine to rummage through ashtrays when no one was looking in search of
a partially smoked cigarette but of course someone was looking. You. You knew.
When you hold onto the strong thread, you unbury yourself.
