Honestly Fabricated

(California)

When I wasn’t a memory,
the chosen—always mine,
blue flowers and willows,
the diamond print on cotton
in shades of precious gems,
taffeta and its leaf like autumnal rustle,
puckered pique and dotted Swiss
raised like Braille, plush
velour and velveteen
reminiscent of soil revealing the unearthed,
no longer too wide or long
remnants, castaways to touch,
me, before the vertical mirror
where I twisted scraps, pulling to unwind
between slack and taut,
the days my clothes were made
by mother’s needle and will.
