One of These Nights

One of these nights—
cooking grease slick
in my hair, dinner plates
scrubbed, the neighbor’s
beagle baying long
and low in the distance,
a bugle of cool blue air
sounding again its one
unresolved insistence—

one of these nights
I’ll sit on this kitchen
stool, the window
opening inward and
outward endlessly, and like
a sleeper waking to knowledge
of just-lived dreams, I’ll wake
to my face, a yellow
projection in deep
blue glass, and with
some difficulty recall
just what it was
I was waiting for.
